HONEY LINGAM 1987-2004 Black Indian Basalt This is a sculpture which has been fashioned and reworked over the years, always present in my studio, waiting for its own time. In India the lingam is a revered and ever-present form as the phallus of Shiva, but it is also present at the centre of household life as pestle and mortar for grinding and cooking. Indian carved stones often convey spiritual, architectural and functional qualities into day-to-day life. Pillars of the porch, tools, utensils, vehicles, and deities are often washed, dressed and oiled. My own use of oil and colour confers on the sculpture a degree of intimacy and spirituality through offering and libation. © Stephen Cox 2006
