CONJUNCTION 1987-2004 Black Indian Basalt Conjunction is perhaps the most figurative work I have carved. Carving involves a meditation on the stone and a dialogue with it: it is my belief that stone possesses an inner meaning and a history that as a sculptor I can reveal and bring to light. An important aspect of this dialogue is that time and events locked-up in the stone take us back to the origins of the universe, especially in this dolorific material which is one of the oldest known. Conjunction deals with Hindi cosmology in which Shiva as Ardhanaresvara is both male and female in order to procreate. In Western terms the figure might include a reference to Freud as the conjunction of both female and male tendencies in the self. © Stephen Cox 2006
