Muses d'Orsay

Muses d’Orsay is my response to a commission from the Musée d’Orsay asking me to photograph the museum’s employees in their place of work. With the Musée d’Orsay housing the national collection of 19th century works, I suggested that each employee take his or her own photograph with a rubber bulb snap like in the old days. Each person had ten takes, in other words a roll of film. It was up to each to choose when and how they would be photographed. So they became artists for the time it took them to photograph themselves and thus assume responsibility for their own image.

Thierry Gausseron administrator with the museum since 2005. Favorite work of art: Taches de soleil sur la terrasse by Maurice Denis : « I work at the museum as a manager in the administration and assist the museum’s director. I am the executive officer for implementing the decisions made by the board of directors, to keep an eye on the proper functionning of the establishment on a daily basis and modernizing it over time. In other words, I’m the engineer who oils the joints of this dockside ship. I came to the museum fired both by a particular attachmentto its art work and architecture and the immodest desire to serve the public interest through the museum’s unrivaled cultural policy. »
