Muses d'Orsay

Muses d’Orsay is my response to a commission from the Musée d’Orsay asking me to photograph the museum’s employees in their place of work. With the Musée d’Orsay housing the national collection of 19th century works, I suggested that each employee take his or her own photograph with a rubber bulb snap like in the old days. Each person had ten takes, in other words a roll of film. It was up to each to choose when and how they would be photographed. So they became artists for the time it took them to photograph themselves and thus assume responsibility for their own image.

Jean-Michel Carré head of the development department with the museum since 1997. Favorite work of art: Les Raboteurs de parquet by Gustave Caillebotte : «The museum is funded 50% by its own means. My team’s goal – there are eight of us in all – is to study the public, identify their expectations, promote the museum both in France and abroad, mostly with tourist professionals, disseminate information about our ticketing products and our programs, in short to carry out the communications that go along with the museum’s marketing policy. The various professional sectors at museums are often very compartmentalized. But at the Musée d’Orsay we have succeeded in creating a genuine togetherness in our activities on various levels, be it the curators, communications or marketing. So everyone participates in promoting the museum.»
