Muses d’Orsay is my response to a commission from the Musée d’Orsay asking me to photograph the museum’s employees in their place of work. With the Musée d’Orsay housing the national collection of 19th century works, I suggested that each employee take his or her own photograph with a rubber bulb snap like in the old days. Each person had ten takes, in other words a roll of film. It was up to each to choose when and how they would be photographed. So they became artists for the time it took them to photograph themselves and thus assume responsibility for their own image.

Laurent Stanich matter and framer of graphic works with the museum since 1983. Favorite work of art: a seascape by Gustave Le Gray : « I mat graphic, drawing and photographic works. It means placing works on cardboard backing so as to conserve, present and consult them. Then I frame them with various wood essences depending on the sector. To have in my hands and touch original works by a Seurat or a Nadar is always very moving. I was a part of the team that originally designed the Musée d’Orsay. I have a very clear memory of the empty museum. Walking through it was impressive. I saw the first works arrive such as the Courbets or Rodin’s Balzacthat loomed like a ghost. We worked really hard to be ready for the opening, working seven days a week and late into the night. We had to set up twelve exhibitions at the same time, not to mention the standing collections. The museum was a real beehive. It is an unforgettable time. »
