On the occasion of the expansion of Europe, it was decided to gather photographs to visually familiarize ourselves with the new arrivals. To get to know these future Europeans, to explore where they live, their work and their culture, the organizers of this book chose to commission a young generation of photographers : they were almost all born at the start of the 70s and they were all recruited from the talented breeding ground of the Hachette Foundation Award.

Rip Hopkins' photographs of Riga circus are a record from his continuing documentary work, which has brought him today, notably to Central Asia. He shows his sensitivity in his consideration of colour, materials and all the elements making up a scene, a scene in which the people who fascinate him live and work.
Rip Hopkins was born in Sheffield, in 1972. Graduating in 1996 from the École nationale supérieure de création industrielle in Paris, where he lives today, he is involved both in design and photography. His work in South Sudan was published by Filigranes in 1997, the same year as he received the Mosaïque Award from the National Audiovisual Centre of Luxemburg, for his project on Roma in Europe. He worked on this subject in Romania, which he also made into a documentary film. In 2000 he received the Hachette Foundation Award for his work in Tajikistan. The CCF Foundation for Photography enabled him to produce and exhibit this work in 2002. His interest in Central Asia is on-going and he is currently preparing a book and an exhibition on Uzbekistan. He has been a member of the Vu agency since 1996.
